Snapped 19th September, 2004. This old windmill still turns, but it has seen better days. Its squeaky shaft drives nothing; the water tank is empty. The lower eastern side of Mt Aitken is visible to the left of the image. You can also just see the edge of a water trough, used for cattle drinking. Further to the right, out of the shot, are pegs marking a new residential estate... but that's all for now.

Snapped 20th March, 2006. The windmill bearings have seized, and parts of it have fallen to the ground. The water tank and stand have been removed and unceremoniously dumped in a pile out of shot, presumably for safety reasons. The fencing, trough and remnants of trees and vegetation are also gone. Excavating machines have made cuts up to a metre deep in some places in order to lay a new road. Further east the estate infrastructure is complete, and new houses are being built.

The windmill will most likely be completely removed in the near future. The estate plans show a residential house block being sited next to the road; someone's nature strip or driveway will be where the windmill was.

This area will no longer be considered semi-rural.

The windmill was taken down around the 19th of April 2006. It now lies with the wreckage of its water tank, stand, and a burnt out car that was dumped recently... all pushed out of the way to install stormwater drains. Aerial photographs of the area show the windmill was installed sometime between 1962 and 1970, which means it was standing - and working - for up to 44 years.

Not any more.......
